Glimmer Illusion Cathedral Veil at Full Width

1 tier long veil at full widthHere you see a glimmer illusion cathedral veil at full width. This veil is made of white glimmer illusion at 120″ long. A cathedral length veil is a long veil and at this length the full 108″ width works well and still does not look too thick.

2 Tier Waltz Length Wedding Veil with Swarovski Crystals

Medium fullness traditional veilThis 2 tier waltz length wedding veil has Swarovski crystals scattered throughout. Look for the bits of light reflecting from the veil. We place the flat back crystals back to back on both the front and back of the veil so you only see crystal no matter how the veil moves about.

rhinestone and pencil edge close upThis is a close up of the pencil edge as well as one of the rhinestone crystals.  Do you see it just a bit away from the edge? The whole veil, both layers, has the crystals scattered throughout. As it hung from the lilac bush fluttering in the breeze today the light would catch the various crystals emitting a beautiful sparkle.

2 tier veil with crystalsThis is a good example of how medium fullness looks on a 2 tier veil at a medium length. Notice that the 2 tiers give it a fuller look. At full width it would be even thicker looking. You can also see the traditional shape here, the sides come straight down and curve around the lower edge.

Champagne Veil with 2 tiers and a Cut Edge

2 tier medium fullness short veilThis champagne veil has 2 tiers, layers. It is a short veil at medium fullness. The tiers are 25″ and 23″ long with a plain cut edge. At this shoulder length it still has a lot of body with the 72″ medium fullness. At full width it would be very fluffy. Shorter veils tend look puffier than the long ones do.

Plain edge wedding veilIt’s hard to see the actual color in these photos. This bride has a champagne dress and was having trouble finding a veil in the champagne color. We sent her swatches to see if our champagne matched her dress. We can send them to you too! What is champagne? It’s darker then ivory, more of a beige. There are many variations and different color tones for “champagne” dresses, so it’s good to check out the color in person. Our champagne is usually a good match, but once in awhile we’ve special ordered a different shade/color tone for brides who need it.

Medium Fullness Waltz Length Wedding Veil

Lilacs behind a pencil edge veilLilacs are in bloom at Veil by Roxanne! Here is a pencil edge, narrow stitches the wrap around the very edge of the veil. A pencil edge is a bit less then 1/8″ wide. It gives a nice light outline of the veil that does not interfere in showing a stunning gown or hairstyle.

medium fullness traditional veilHere’s a good view of a traditional shape veil. The sides come straight down and the lower corners are rounded. This is also a good example of what a medium length veil looks like in the medium fullness.

What color to get for an “Eggshell” or very light ivory dress? Diamond white is often the best match. Diamond white is an off white, not a pure bright white and not a creamy ivory either.

Dark Green Organza Mantilla Veil

Elbow Mantilla Organza veilThis dark green organza mantilla veil was a special request. That’s exactly what we are here for making custom made veil! The bride wanted a non-traditional veil in a different color and she has dark green and silver for her wedding. We sent her some samples of potential dark green fabric for her veil (from the US to the UK). One fabric was a beautiful dark green organza with silver embellishments already on it. It was meant to be!

mantilla veil at elbow lengthThis is an elbow length mantilla veil, a 30 inch diameter circle. It has a pencil edge because organza will fray. Notice how the organza is a bit stiffer then other veil fabrics, which is nice for a mantilla as it holds the circular shape well. Many organza fabrics are a bit shiny.

Seeing your daughter…with a gracious smile under an elegant veil

Dear Roxanne,

Our family and our guest had many eventful moments, full of happy laughter during the three days and nights of our daughter’s wedding.

I wish I had time to write those moments here. But I, most importantly, would like to write about and compliment your creation of her veil.

Believe me, there is nothing more joyful and fulfilling than seeing your daughter carrying her head high up, with a gracious smile under an elegant veil.

Thank you very much Roxanne. I know you reserved a good amount of time to think over it in creating this veil. In the end, it was just a sheer beauty with sparkling pictures to remember.

I am attaching some pictures to share with you the real beauty of the veil.

Millions of thanks for contributing to our happiness.

Lace Mantilla Elbow Length Veil with Venice Lace Edge

Elbow MantillaThis lace mantilla is an elbow length veil. The lace edge is done with a Venice lace the customer sent to us. This mantilla is a 36″ circle of ivory bridal illusion and it lets the back of the dress show through. A 3″ clear plastic comb is hidden under the lace. We offer lace veils like this where the bride finds the lace herself or we stock some lace you can choose from. When shopping for lace look for designs that are scalloped on both sides, this allows it to smoothly curve around the edge of the veil. Venice lace works great!

Busting Out! Dress Bust Alterations

Spring is htailoring bust atlterationsere! It’s time for prom dresses, bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses and more. the most common tailoring need for formal (or casual) dresses is bust alterations.

When shopping for the dress keep in mind that it’s usually best to have a bust too large taken in. When you can’t find a perfect ti, go with the bigger size. A dress too tight in the bust can’t always be fixed, but in some cases it is the only option and we can get creative.

Usually the dress needs taken in at the bust. It depends on the fit, but most often this can be done by taking in the side seams. Sometimes it needs a different adjustment and a dart can be created or a center front seam taken in to reshape the curve of the bust. Sometime bra cups can be added to fix the fit or a combination of tailoring and cups.

bust alterations for promMany of us are not the same on each side and some have  had surgery. Bust alterations can make unevenness unapparent, having both sides custom fit wil give an even visual effect.

What if it is too tight through the buts? If it still zips it’s likely there’s enough fabric in the side seam to let it out enough to fit. Sometimes chiffon dresses don’t have extra fabric at the seam. If there is not enough fabric in the seam allowances or if the dress doesn’t zip and needs more fabric we can get creative.

Usually the best option is to put gussets in the side seams under the arms, making them quite invisible. Gussets are pieces of fabric added to make the dress fit. The trick is finding matching fabric. If the dress is also too long we can use fabric cut off from shortening the dress. Otherwise we match it as best as possible. You might be able to have the dress shop order fabric from the manufacturer, but they can’t always do this and it’s expensive.

Depending on how it fits and the design of the dress, it might be converted into a lace up corset back style. Again we need to have a matching fabric or a coordinating fabric. This is more expensive to do then gussets. A corset back will clearly be visible across the center back of the dress, so it’s usually not a good option for a bridesmaid who is supposed to look like the others.

Good luck busting out!

Getting Pants the Right Length: All about Pants Hems

pants hemsYour pants will last longer, feel better and look better when they are the correct length on you. Here are some tips for pants shopping and length alterations.

Shopping for pants

  • Be sure to wear the shoes you plan to typically wear with the pants you are shopping for.
  • Make sure to put you shoes back on when trying the pants on in the dressing room. You cannot tell if the length is right without shoes on.
  • Not the right length: opt for the pants that are too long because the ones that are too short often have a permanent line from where the original hem was pressed and sewn. That permanent line is going to show when the pants are lengthened.

Now that you own new pants

  • Wash your pants, sometimes they shrink and the place they shrink the most is usually in the length. That might solve your problem if they were just a little too long. It’s 100% cotton or a high cotton content that usually shrinks, rayon and some other fibers shrink too.
  • Wearing too long pants makes holesDon’t walk around on pants that are too long. Holes will quickly get worn at the bottom. It’s like rubbing them against sandpaper all day. When you finally get them shortened it makes it difficult, expensive and sometimes impossible to do.
  • A quick fix if you have to wear them before getting them altered: safety pins, fashion tape, a few hand stitches at the side seams, or we’ve even seen duct tape (but it leaves a residue behind on the inside).

Advice for DIY Pants Hems

  • Beware of tapered legs, they get narrower toward the end and when you fold them up for a shorter hem it wont lay flat or sew in smoothly. The bottom edge you are trying sew up is a smaller diameter than the inside pants diameter you are sewing it too. You have to take out the hem and re-sew both side seams to make the end of the pants bigger around so it will match for your new hem.
  • Measure 5 times and cut once…really.
  • If you are machine stitching a thick hem, like jeans, get a hump jumper. It’s a handy sewing notion that helps you sew evenly over bumps from side seams.
  • To hand stitch I recommend the slip stitch and  anchor it at the side seams with a few extra stitches through the seam allowances.

When you go to your Tailor

  • Wash and dry the pants as you normally would, if you don’t you will not end up with the correct length…unless you never wash the pants!
  • Wear or bring along the shoes you will be wearing most often with the pants.

Kids, Uniforms and Pants that can’t be Cut

  • Kids grow, young kids may do fine just wearing the pants folded up.
  • For growing kids, let your tailor know the pants may need let back out in the future. The tailor can leave a larger hem allowance.
  • Band uniforms and rented costumes often are not allowed to be cut; all extra fabric has to be folded up in the hem. Be sure to know the rules and tell your tailor. Also for uniforms they might have to end at a specific length so everyone is the same, find out what the guidelines are.

Jeans Hemsjeans with a worn look

  • Many jeans are manufactured to look worn, even the hem will have that worn look. Shortening the jeans will change that.
  • For the strongest and longest lasing hem, just have a regular new ham put in, wash and wear and it will start to get that natural look.
  • To speed up the worn look, use a bleach pen and sandpaper to create the worn look.
  • jeans with original hem sewn onFor the exact same hem, request and pay extra for your tailor to shorten the jeans and put the original hem back on. Make sure all cut edges are finished with stitching or seam binding because denim frays very quickly.

Pants Too Short?

  • Usually it’s best to just move on and get a new longer pair.
  • Sometimes that’s not an option, so we get creative.
  • You can try having the hem let out if there’s enough fabric folded up in the hem. There may be a permanent line from the original hem fold. You might be able to hide it using a permanent marker in the same color. Hang on to the marker because it will need a touch up on occasion.
  • If that is not possible cuffs could be made of a coordinating fabric and added to the hem.
  • Or if the pant have an elastic waist (no zipper), the waistband could be extended. This will work if the pants will always have the waist covered by a shirt because fabric is going to be added to the top of the waist. Caution: this will make the crotch lower too so only a little length can be added this way (works great if the crotch is tight to begin with)

Enjoy wearing comfortable pants!
